The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is all set for inauguration on October 08, 2025 by P M Narendra Modi.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) indicating the runway will be available after September 20, a strong signal of its readiness.

Domestic flights are expected to begin operations by late October or early November.

Initially, the airport will operate on a 12-hour shift to test system stability before moving to a 24-hour schedule.

The official IATA code for the Navi Mumbai International Airport is ‘NMI’.

Passengers now have to check between two codes “BOM” & “NMI” carefully before booking flights.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport will eventually have two parallel runways, which will allow for simultaneous flight operations.

In the initial launch phase, the airport will operate with a single runway.

The second runway is planned to be constructed as part of the Phase 3 expansion, which aims to increase passenger capacity to 50 million annually.

The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved a temporary user development fee (UDF) for the financial year 2025–26.

Sources report that:

For departing passengers, the UDF is ₹620 for domestic flights and ₹1,225 for international flights.

For arriving passengers, the fee is ₹270 for domestic and ₹525 for international travel, not including taxes.

Initial domestic operations will be handled by major carriers, with IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India confirmed to operate from day one.

Discussions are also in advanced stages with other domestic and international airlines to ensure robust connectivity once the airport becomes fully operational.

The NMIA project spans a total area of 1,160 hectares.

The initial phase is designed to handle 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and 0.5 million metric tons of cargo.

Upon full completion, the airport will have the capacity to serve 90 MPPA, more than double the capacity of the current Mumbai airport.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, is located adjacent to the Ulwe node of Navi Mumbai.

The site is in the Raigad district, approximately 18 km from Ulwe and Panvel, and is situated on National Highway 4B.

Designed by renowned Zaha Hadid Architect’s, the airport’s design is inspired by the lotus, India’s national flower, giving it a unique architectural identity.

It will eventually feature four passenger terminals, a central terminal complex, a dedicated cargo terminal, and a general aviation terminal that is planned to be India’s largest.

The initial phase includes a domestic cargo terminal of 33,000 m² and an international cargo terminal of 23,700 m².

The airport is being developed with multi-modal connectivity in mind, including road, rail, and metro.

Key road links include the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link (MTHL), the Sion-Panvel Highway, and National Highway 4B.

A newly approved (under-construction) 25-km elevated road from Thane to NMIA is expected to reduce travel time from 90 minutes to just 30 minutes.

The Navi Mumbai Metro’s Line 1 is already operational and has a planned extension to the airport (under-construction).

The NMIA project is being executed in five phases at an estimated total cost of around ₹17,000 crore.

The project is a public-private partnership developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) with Adani Airports Holdings holding a 74% stake and CIDCO holding 26%.

The full expansion is projected to be completed by 2032, reaching a final capacity of 90 MPPA.

The NMIA is designed to operate in parallel with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to ease congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

NMIA’s final capacity of 90 MPPA is planned to be twice that of the current CSMIA.

A key difference is NMIA’s planned two parallel runways for simultaneous operations, whereas CSMIA has a single crossing runway, which limits its expansion potential.

"Maharashtra CM Fadnavis had said that the NMIA will be will be many times bigger than the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai"
